What is the Anti-dsDNA Antibody Test?
The Anti-double-stranded DNA (Anti-dsDNA) Antibody test is used to detect autoantibodies that target double-stranded DNA. It is a highly specific marker for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease affecting multiple organs.
Normal Range:
- Negative: <1:10 titer (No detectable antibodies)
- Borderline/Indeterminate: 1:10 - 1:40 titer
- Positive: ≥1:40 titer (May indicate autoimmune disease, especially SLE)
(Reference values may vary by laboratory testing methods)
Purpose of the Test:
✅ Diagnose Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) – Highly specific for lupus diagnosis.
✅ Monitor Disease Activity – Helps track lupus flare-ups and treatment response.
✅ Differentiate Autoimmune Disorders – Distinguishes SLE from other autoimmune conditions.
✅ Evaluate Symptoms – Ordered for joint pain, fatigue, rash, kidney issues, and unexplained inflammation.
What Can Affect Anti-dsDNA Test Results?
🔹 Positive Anti-dsDNA: Strongly associated with SLE, but may also be present in other autoimmune diseases.
🔹 Negative Anti-dsDNA but Lupus Symptoms: Other autoantibodies like ANA (antinuclear antibody) may be present.
How is the Test Performed?
A blood sample is taken and analyzed using Indirect Immunofluorescence Assay (IFA), a method that detects autoantibodies with high sensitivity.
📌 When to Get Tested? If experiencing symptoms suggestive of lupus or autoimmune disease.
