🔬 What is the Test?
The Absolute Neutrophil Count (ANC) Test measures the number of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell (WBC) that helps fight infections. Neutrophils are the first line of defense against bacterial and fungal infections.
📊 Normal Ranges:
- Adults & Children: 1,500 - 8,000 cells/µL
- Mild Neutropenia: 1,000 - 1,500 cells/µL
- Moderate Neutropenia: 500 - 1,000 cells/µL
- Severe Neutropenia: < 500 cells/µL (High risk of infections)
🩺 Purpose of the Test:
✅ Diagnose and monitor infections or inflammation
✅ Assess immune system function
✅ Monitor cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy
✅ Detect bone marrow disorders (leukemia, aplastic anemia, etc.)
✅ Identify effects of medications that suppress bone marrow
🧪 When is it Recommended?
🔹 Frequent infections, fever, or slow wound healing
🔹 Symptoms of immune disorders or blood diseases
🔹 Before & during chemotherapy or radiation therapy
🔹 Chronic conditions affecting the immune system (HIV, autoimmune diseases)
📝 How is the Test Done?
1️⃣ A blood sample is drawn from a vein.
2️⃣ The lab calculates ANC based on total WBC & neutrophil percentage.
3️⃣ Results determine infection risk and immune function.
⚠️ What Do Abnormal Results Mean?
📈 High ANC (Neutrophilia):
- Bacterial infections
- Inflammation or stress
- Leukemia or myeloproliferative disorders
- Smoking or steroid use
📉 Low ANC (Neutropenia):
- Viral infections (HIV, hepatitis, flu)
- Autoimmune diseases (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis)
- Chemotherapy or radiation effects
- Bone marrow suppression (aplastic anemia, leukemia)
